Just read an article over at Node with some looks to be good news,

Well that sure was unexpected. Out of nowhere Gerry Harvey has announced that Harvey Norman is launching a new website to selling European import games at heavily reduced prices. Even more unexpected, the site is already live and open for business! Skyrim for $59, Deus Ex: Human Revolution for $26, and Battlefield 3 for $62 are just some of the prices the site is offering, and only $3.95 shipping per game. The move could mean some serious competition in Australia's grey import scene, with gamers the clear winners.

Harvey's reasoning for launching the new website, called Harvey Norman Direct Import, is obvious and resonates the sentiments of many Australian gamers who have turned to overseas import sites such as Oz Gameshop due to the strong Australian dollar and comparatively high cost of videogames in local retailers. In Harvey's own words, “if you can’t beat them, join them.”

Speaking with Kotaku, Harvey explained that it was a necessary move for the company:

"The Australian gaming customer has been paying far too much for console games. Retailers and suppliers have been keeping the prices far too high. We’re utilising our network to bring better prices to the consumer. We strongly recommend that you do not buy a game until you’ve seen our website. We will save you money on games [...] We stand by this as a great new feature in the Australian market and we’re going to rip up the prices of Australian market.”
The site, which went live at 6pm, will operate out of the Republic of Ireland to ship games to customers directly and at better prices, meaning they will also be GST free. At just $3.95 shipping per game, it is comparative, if not better, than domestic shipping rates.

The site currently has a diverse selection of the latest games for Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS. We are assured that PC games will be made available on the site in the near future.

The prices and stock will only be available online and not in store at this point in time.

Pc games are coming soon so I hope we get the same prices as some of those console games and at the very least it will stir up the market and hopefully bring down prices in the retail stores.

yeh saw that one too - my hope is that it will help to push down local pricing for games, but the cynic in me says it's just Jerry trying to make a quick buck before he retires ....

here's a bet ..

i guarantee that a game that sells for $50 on this harvey norman gst dodge site can still be cheerfully bought for $100 from a local bricks/n/mortar Harvery Norman store, because they depend upon the parochial nature of australian consumers.

sad i know, but that's greed for ya.
