Thanks guys for the smiles, congrats etc re: 1000 posts .. to celebrate - I decided to do something I've been wanting to do for a LONG time .. I deleted my facebook account (well kinda).

I signed up to facebook about 4 years ago at the urging of a friend of mine but quickly saw what a MASSIVE waste of time and energy it was/would become if you let it.
Over the entire time I had my account I posted maybe 40-50 times. In contrast, I had friends who posted multiple time per day - which is fine if you have something worthwhile to say, but ffs how often can it be interesting to read yet another status update that 'Joe Bloggs is currently enjoying his chicken salad sandwich' - i mean really - i don't give a shit (sorry for the lang - but i felt its was approprietly necessary to depict how over facebook i am). Also, with all the offline tracking/cookie chatter about facebook tracking users whenever they hit a site that has the facebook 'Like' button - I felt it was time to vote with my feet and bail.

So I went looking for the option in the account settings to delete my account - well wouldn't you know .. it was buried sooo deep I had to actually google "how do I delete my facebook account". Interestingly, as I have that predictive search thing turned on for google, after I had typed "how do i del" the first search term to pop up (popularity wise) was "how do I delete my facebook account" - seems i'm not the only one who wants to know...

any way - I eventually found this blog that talks about the difficulties of deleting your account, as the obvious option they give in the acct settings is to suspend your account - which means all your stuff still stays up there and if you ever log back in, your account is reactivated right away. near the botton of the blog was a link to a page where you can opt to delete your facebook account - so I clicked the button and facebook tells me "your account has been suspended for two weeks - if you don't log in during that time, it will be deleted forever" - FINALLY!

so, happily, FB is the ONLY FB in my life now - which is how I prefer it Smile
thanks for reading.

I know a little of what its like to delete. I only made a fake one to get discounts - 'like us for a coupon'. This is the oddest superficial language I ever read.
Another time facebook was finding my friends through hotmail and sneakily sending requests. Not good.
To delete it... it is indeed buried.

I still have Facebook, basically for work with clients and advertising, but it is also good to keep in touch with family and friends that are not part of {FB}. Dad is in hospital and he loves posting jokes and links, to keep him interested. Shocked Get well soon Dad and Mother who is going through the same pain. Cancer SUCKS Evil or Very Mad + my daughter is going to live in Kuala Lumpur, so great way to keep in touch rather than texting and costing a a bundle What a Face

CC2005 "{FB}Zebitty (1001) make a space age movie to go with the tally"

Ok so you can delete a faceless book account. I set one up for a pending school reunion of which I didn't attend in the end, so I'll go back and delete it. It is currently only suspended.

This article will be of interest to a few of you I think. I reckon it should be required reading for anyone on a social network site. http://www.cracked.com/article_19029_6-things-social-networking-sites-need-to-stop-doing.html

Yep, I use Facebook. I very rarely post anything on it though. Whats the point in letting people know what I'm eating?

As Al said, if used properly it can be a good tool. It's handy for organising catch ups, the cricket club uses it to announce changes, handy way of sharing pictures and just to generally keep in touch with people.

But then theres the people who post everything about their day, and personal information that should never be posted online.

Put it this way, if theres something which could lead to identify theft, information reaching the wrong people, stuff that could be used against you or someone else or just anything that you dont want a complete stranger on the street to know. It shouldnt go on the internet.

Even if you're keeping friends list to a minimum (ie people you actually know and are friends with) and just using it to keep in touch etc, the latest crop of revelations where facebook are using your membership (whether you're logged in at the time or not) to track your movements from any website that has a "like" button on it - even if you don't click it. Even though they said this was being done in error, it was revealed several days later that they had just recently applied for a patent to exactly the thing they said was being done in error. [Link]

Where I shop on line, which websites I visit, which clubs I am a member of, where I'm booking my holidays/flights etc is my business - not facebooks.

This was one of the main reasons I ditched it.

And finally - RIP Mr Jobs. Although most of the time I disagreed with how he did things and often thought he was a dick, there's no denying that he was a clever man who changed computing with his ideas.

I have tried to delete my facebook account and it is just indefinitely deactivated. This is a big annoyance for me and i have never liked the notion of all my material being owned by facebook for all time to do whatever they like with, pretty much anyway. How is it permanently deleted and is it really deleted from the facebook database entirely? By that i dont mean publicly i mean stored somewhere on some storage server.

This is copy/pasted from the page I found that showed me how to delete my facebook account - hope it helps.

HOW TO DELETE (long version)

Go here - https://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account

Click "Submit" and follow the instructions.

Your account will be deactivated for two weeks, and if you DO NOT USE FACEBOOK IN ANY WAY during that period, your account is permanently deleted.

I REPEAT: Your profile isn't deleted right away! You must NOT log in to, or interact in any other way with Facebook for at least two weeks, as it will cancel the deletion request. That includes NOT logging in to Facebook using any client (like the iPhone app or IM:s like Pidgin), NOT clicking embedded Like-buttons on other websites, NOT logging in to other services using Facebook Connect (like Digg) etc etc.

Hey, while your're at it, delete all your browsing/forms history and cookies as well, to minimize the risk of accidentally using your account!

Cheers,
Zeb
