Supersonic' broadband for east coast

Optus cable users in three capital cities along the east coast will have access to "supersonic" broadband speeds, according to the telco.

On Monday, Optus announced that customers in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney will experience speeds up to four times faster due to the upgrade of the Optus Hybrid Fibre Coaxial.

The upgrade is the first multi-city rollout of DOCSIS 3.0 technology in Australia.

"Australians are hungry for high speed broadband, so we've upgraded our cable network to provide the broadband speeds of tomorrow, today," said Michael Smith, Optus consumer managing director.

It is expected that more than 1.4 million households will have access to the broadband if they upgrade to a premium speed pack priced from $15 a month.

DOCSIS 3.0 technology differs from previous systems by allowing data transmission over multiple channels when a customer has a compatible DOCSIS 3.0 modem.
