Re: Free Games
Anarchy Online is still free. It's an MMO and it took over my life for four years because it is complex and difficult and you absolutely must collude with others in order to get to the good stuff which is what really separates it from WOW which can be solo'd right up to level 80 or wherever the end point is now.

you gotta work with others in WoW to obtain good gear .. while you can solo up to level 80 (will be 85 with the cataclysm expansion) and find some 'decent' gear, there's no great gear to be had unless you collude with others (ie raid).
i've dont a lot of raiding and i've experienced first hand the difference between good random drop stuff that you find in solo play and the stuff you get from bosses when raiding - trust me - the raid stuff is light years ahead of the random solo drops.
even the rep grind gear or pvp rewards are no comparison for the high end raid drops you can get when you have 25 like minded people all working to bring down raid bosses
- oh - also .. Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO) has recently changed to the free-to-play model

Re: Free Games
oh also - a question about Anarchy Online .. when you say 'free to play' - do you mean totally free - is there an option to spend real $$ to buy in game items, level quicker etc etc?
those mixed free/onlineshop games annoy me a little as people who cbf doing the work just spend real $$ and get ahead of you .. if AO is totally free - no need to spend $$ to see all of the content etc, i'm thinking i might grab it and take a look
maybe you can show me the ropes ?

Re: Free Games
Yes it is free to play for as long as you like but of course there is a catch... you don't get any of the expansions. So you'd play for free only if you were happy to pretty much do the basic stuff which is ok for a while but even that gets pretty nigh impossible long before you reach level 100 let alone level 200. (which is as far as you can go with a free account)
I wouldn't recommend doing it unless you have a vast amount of time to spend.
Now having said that it is actually pretty cheap to play - works out at about $9/mnth if you pay a year in advance. I think the cost of expansions is on top of that but you can get em all for about 40-50 bucks.
Even so, you need a good org - read clan/guild - and for us Aussie's there are not many folks playing at the peak times - in other words it's very much a US and Europe dominated game. It has a small but dedicated following and only runs three servers. The game has been running for eight years so it's highly developed in terms of patches and content but this also means that unless you have someone guiding you through it you'll get lost and bored and drift away like so many have.
Plain fact of the matter is that it's bugger of a game to get anywhere fast with. That's why people go to WoW. It moves quick and continues to move quick. AO is a grind! A real grind! And by the way I take your point about WOW needing team work to get the good stuff. If WoW didn't have that aspect it would have died. And WoW is a good game. Nice graphics too. But AO has a completely different feel. I think it has to be experienced but it needs to be noted right at the outset that this is a game of EXTREME patience.
I could go on about the intricacies of twinking toons so that level 25's hit like level 60's but that's where really knowing and delving deep reaps the fun. Unfortunately it's fun that takes a long long time to get to.

I tried DnD online. Not bad. Made a character on Thelanis - dwarven paladin.

Yeh cool! As you mentioned, it requires vast amounts of time to hit high level etc - prob not my goal, but I'm quite interested in checking the game out. You never know when you'll play something that 'clicks' with you and if not, then at least I can say I've had a look and know what's involved.
As for DDO - I have a few characters and I think cheeko has a character as well. We're on the Argonnessen server. At the time, it seemed like that server had the largest contingent of non U.S. players, so I was hoping there'd be a chance of at least coming across other aussue/nz players.

Re: Free Games
Cool, I have a dwarven paladin... just hit 2nd level. Still puzzling over these 4th ed rules. But it's a nice looking game and seems to play pretty well.

Super Monday Night Combat
Some may be aware super monday night combat is now available for free via steam. It was launched yesterday on the 19th. It had been in the coming soon list for a while. The original MNC was nothing special and for $15 I guess did not appeal to many which resulted in only 2 aussie servers and an irregular group of players. SMNC is only 2.5gb and is worth trying. In that everyone can play it, it could be more enjoyable then the first.I cannot tell you much more about the game as I am yet to give it a serious go.
