OMEGA GAME CHALLENGE - FREE GAME
Guys,
OMEGA is free to download and play.
OMEGA is a game in which you are a computer programmer that writes code to control robots that do battle with other robots.
You build your robot (within your allocated budget) by selecting chassis, engine, armour, weapons, sensors etc. Once the robot is assembled, you use a pseudo programming language built into the game, to write the program that will control your robot once you place it on the battlefield (ie once the battle starts, you have no direct control over your robot - it will live or die depending on how good/smart your program code is).
Working your way up the ranks from "junior programmer" to "senior systems designer" and beyond will increase the budget you have at your disposal when selecting components for your robot. This allows for heavier armour/chassis, more destructive weapons, more powerful engines, more capable sensors etc, including an array of specialist equipment (eg repair kits, defensive shields, signal jammers etc)
So the challenge is this: Go get this game, start writing code and building robots to work your way up the ladder. When you think you're ready, post an copy of your robot here in this thread (you can encrypt your designs so others can run them, but not see the top secret code that runs the robot) and I'll run it against my (and others) best robot/s and we'll see who has the best bot.
1. Go here ( http://toadstool.net/games/omega/downloads/index.htm ) and get the game for free (you prob want the MS-DOS version).
2. Then go here ( http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/12771/play-your-favorite-dos-games-in-xp-vista-and-windows-7/ ) and follow the instructions for downloading and installed D-Fend DOS emulator so you can get the game running. I found it helped to install D-Fend "As Administrator".
3. An orientation guide can be found here ( http://www.toadstool.net/games/omega/docs/oguide/index.htm ) and general robot building tips and some stategy can be found here ( http://www.toadstool.net/games/omega/strategy/index.htm )
So - build your robot and see if you can beat me
See you on the battlefield!
Zeb.
EDIT: One final tip - When you do a "Clearance Evaluation" to try for a promotion, at the end of the evaluation when you're given the option to PRINT the results, just click cancel. The evaluation result will still be saved, but if you try to PRINT it, you will crash the game.

Re: OMEGA GAME CHALLENGE - FREE GAME
This game sounds familiar for some reason. I swear there was a programming game of similar description, quite some time ago.
I cant bring myself to play it though zeb. Not a big fan of having to calculate things despite how geeky (cool geeky) it sounds. I like explosions though, please tell me you get to see explosions.

Re: OMEGA GAME CHALLENGE - FREE GAME
Explosions depend on what weapons are being used. Nukes make the biggest explosions. There are laser weapons as well - not much in the explosion stakes, but they do a very nice job of melting armour and internal systems.
