Competition for Steam? Empty Competition for Steam?

Post by {FB}Zebitty Sat 04 Jun 2011, 9:28 am

EA have launched their own digital delivery service. It looks similar to Steam, but it's called Origin.

http://store.origin.com/store/eaapac/en_AU/home/ThemeID.850400/ccRef.en_US, but sadly (as you can see from the URL), they have also adopted this regionalised pricing crap that steam carry on with.

So we pay double for games here, even though the AUS$ is worth more than the US$

*sigh*

I think this is the rebranded eadm/eastore actually. Which has been around for quite a while. Possibly in the future there may be a global price, who knows.

Hey, you got more choices than steam though. Only a matter of time before everyone has a service. What may annoy you more is the scattering of your friends, statistics and achievements.

Ubisofts u play is also slowly being updated with achievements, online stats. Also publishers websites are going up for the games stats and clans such as call of duty.

i wonder if australian steam users would be willing to participate in a "dont buy games from steam for a week" event as part of some petition or something. some kind of epic protest that would be nice.

S3van that is the only way that you will receive a better deal is by boycott as you have indicated.

I could understand the price being marginally dearer than the some other countries if the games are pressed, packaged, shipped here and distributed around this vast country via one or two ports? Sure we are an isolated island continent although we are still obtaining this "down the wire" so it is a greater kick in the teeth. And considering our current dollar value it appears we are being robbed?

Has anyone broached or asked the question publically? possibly enlighten one or two of the PC Mags to push the crusade, although would they entertain it if steam are an advertiser with them thus you'll get an unrealistic "cooked the books" response?

Actually since Australia has a free trade agreement with the US, it's my understanding that it's illegal (according to US law) for steam not to let Australian consumers purchase directly from the same website that their US customers use.

That said, governments don't give a shit about gamers and are unlikely to press the matter with steam, given both US and Aus govt's just don't care.

(responding to cc's post which has disappeared. I saw it you can't hide! I think there is a new point here though)
I really dont think steam has a large effect on the sale price.
Many of the competitiors for the digital downloads are more expensive which I believe it is the publishers or distributors fault, I forget which one. Which is why zebitty may not be happy with the rebranded EA service.
EA have a history of unfair pricing you see. many games have cost 50% more and have exclusive content.
For example crysis 2 had exclusive skins and dog tags on eadm you couldnt get from steam. Which may annoy people who may feel like they dont have the full game.

A lot of games do that now though. Bad Company did it. Assassins Creed. Splinter Cell Conviction. Medal of Honor. Dirt. Battlefield 3 will do it. All in subtle ways, pay extra $X for Y special edition to unlock Z exclusive content

A lot of people criticize Activision for charging $15 for DLC, but at least their honest about charging extra and dont try and disguise it like EA.

But anyway... Onto Steam.

We charge way to much compared to America, regional pricing should be bought in.

But on the plus side, I'd rather pay that little bit extra for my games than be American Wink

I am concerned about this as we all have so much money tied up in steam accounts now, that if the competition was to hot for them they might go down with our games to boot.
I still say steam works very well in so many areas it would be a shame not to support them. I really like the game update feature including GPU, so lets hope they stay strong.

Your right V, Steam may have its issues, but it just works. Automatically updates games, can update drivers and all your games are in the one spot, and from my experience seem to have a lot less issues than hard copies, especially when it comes to installation.

I remember reading a piece a few months back, that if they go down, have they promised to make our steam games playable with out steam? No.

I think that if Steam ever did go down the crapper, then they would release a patch to make the games still playable

Perhaps the game company would be happy to substitute your copy on its service. EA have been able to give me a copy of my game on ea download manager when I own the cdkey, even when I cant register it.
I wouldnt want to own or have the time to play the duds out of the 170+ games I have on steam- even if offered. Maybe 10 max singleplayer I would keep, but multiplayer games and stats I would like to carry over somehow.

Thats really not going to work.

Who do you think will pre-order a game (such as Battlefield 3) using only a digital download service which hasnt yet been proven when the servers are under heavy load?

Lets just hope it doesn't require activation like COD games do on Steam.

They may do that to keep the game updated and have a news feed. Maybe they are after something more social ingame. Yet to see more plans for Bf3
For crysis 2 I dont think it was possible to play singleplayer through the eadm without it being updated first. I dont mind whos service I'll use, Same desktop shortcut to me.
Few problems with the downloading though with eadm. It downloads in sections and verifies as it goes. So It would hit 70% and drop back to 50%. Bad file or something. Took ages.

I've only used EADM once but was happy with the way it worked for me & the updates for ea games are done auto as you start the game
& quick I found.
Down side if you want to transfer game to a 2nd computer or keep a backup for later
it's a little bit of a pain but can be done with out re-downloading.
I think they might be working on this.

Competition for Steam? Empty Re: Competition for Steam?

Post by {FB}Burnt Thu 16 Jun 2011, 6:43 pm

it was steam that remove crysis 2

UPDATE: Electronic Arts has responded to my questions regarding its current relationship with Steam, claiming Crysis 2 was not removed from Steam because EA asked. Instead, EA claims Steam "imposed a set of business terms" that resulted in an existing agreement Crytek had regarding Crysis 2 that "violates the new rules," resulting in the "expulsion" of Crysis 2.

I've asked EA for better clarification on what "business terms" have changed and why games like Alice: Madness Returns are no longer on Steam. I've also requested comment from Valve.

The full statement is below:

"It’s unfortunate that Steam has removed Crysis 2 from their service. This was not an EA decision or the result of any action by EA.

Steam has imposed a set of business terms for developers hoping to sell content on that service – many of which are not imposed by other online game services. Unfortunately, Crytek has an agreement with another download service which violates the new rules from Steam and resulted in its expulsion of Crysis 2 from Steam.

Crysis 2 continues to be available on several other download services including GameStop, Amazon, Origin.com and more."

ORIGINAL STORY: When Electronic Arts decided to heavily push its Origin web portal and distribution service at E3, alongside word it would be the exclusive home to Star Wars: The Old Republic, it became an open question whether EA would continue to play ball with Steam. We appear to have an answer to that question, with Crysis 2, Alice: Madness Returns and Battlefield 3 all disappearing.

So far, I've been unable to get an answer from any party involved. Valve, EA and Crytek have all, to date, remained unresponsive. Other outlets are reporting a statement's coming later today.

You can still, however, purchase other EA games on Steam. Crysis and Need for Speed are still there, as is the Need for Speed series. It mostly seems that EA's chosen to start holding back its most recent and upcoming releases, in hopes of driving consumer traffic to its own service.

As soon as I know more, I'll pass it on.

This kind of crap is what has always made me a little wary of services like steam.

Yeh it has its good points - automatic patches etc, but when they can just change the rules and retroactively say that a game they used to 'stock' now breaks the rules - that sucks. So what about all the people that bought Crysis 2 via steam and don't currently have it installed? What hoops will they need to jump through to reclaim their investment in this game?

All I can say is I'm glad I bought Crysis 2 on eBay. My DVD copy is sitting safely on my bookshelf with the other titles I own. I even recall paying roughly half what steam were selling the game for too, which makes me extra happy I didn't but it from steam.

alice is back on steam

The confusing back-and-forth between Steam and Electronic Arts continues. Crysis 2 and Alice: Madness Returns listings all disappeared from Steam earlier this week, followed by a statement from EA stating certain business terms had changed.

The change violated an existing agreement Crytek had regarding Crysis 2 with another company, EA said, thus forcing Crysis 2 to come down from the store.

That didn't really explain what happened to Alice: Madness Returns, though.

Alice: Madness Returns returned to Steam today. EA sent me an odd statement explaining why.

"EA Partners and Spicy Horse Games appreciate Steam’s decision to sell Alice: Madness Returns," said the company. "The game is also available on several other download services including Amazon, Gamestop and Origin.com."

This doesn't answer several questions: why isn't Crysis 2 back? Why was it "Steam's decision" to allow Alice: Madness Returns back into Steam? Will Battlefield 3 ever show up? Does this impact future EA releases? What business terms changed that prompted this in the first place?

At E3, EA launched Origin, a proprietary digital platform for serving up EA content. Though neither company has said so, there's reason to believe these moves have to do with Origin.

I'm asking all of these to try and learn more. When (and if) I hear back, I'll let you know.

The next year or two will be interesting for Steam.

We have EA's new game service online, then there's "OnLive" (which scares me... but thats a whole new topic), I'm surprised Ubisoft havent gone for their own version.

Another thing, sure Steam has their great deals, automatic patching etc....

But I miss displaying my new games on the shelf
